Las Vegas Hepatitis Scare Affects Thousands

An investigation by Nevada health authorities uncovered widespread unsafe medical practices at two Las Vegas endoscopy centers. As a result of these practices, more than 50,000 patients may have been exposed to hepatitis C, hepatitis B, HIV or other blood-borne illnesses.

Health officials say that anyone who was treated at the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada or the Desert Shadow Endoscopy Center between March 2004 and January 11, 2008 should visit their doctor as soon as possible to be tested for hepatitis B and C, as well as HIV.

More than 850 patients treated at the clinic have already tested positive for hepatitis C, according to the attorneys representing them.

However, because some of these patients were treated before March 2004, some experts believe that anyone who was treated at the clinic may want to have themselves tested in order to rule out the possibility of infection.

Both of the clinics involved in the Las Vegas hepatitis scare are run by the Gastroenterology Center of Nevada, which is owned by Dr. Dipak Desai and other doctors.

Former employees at these two clinics have said that they were ordered by doctors to reuse medicine vials, syringes and other equipment in order to save money. These practices may have spread hepatitis C infections to hundreds of patients.

Investigators have also found that doctors were performing colonoscopy exams that can take from 15 to 30 minutes in as little as two minutes.

In some cases, records show that doctors were performing procedures on multiple patients at the same time. Some patients were also over-billed for anesthesia times or improperly diagnosed.

If you have become ill after being treated at the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada or the Desert Shadow Endoscopy Center, or if you have suffered other problems, an experienced attorney can help you to file a hepatitis exposure lawsuit.
